{"id":70,"date":"2020-10-08T04:33:09","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T04:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economycremations.com\/blog\/?p=70"},"modified":"2020-10-08T04:33:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T04:33:09","slug":"notorious-rbg-a-study-in-values","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economycremations.com\/blog\/notorious-rbg-a-study-in-values\/","title":{"rendered":"Notorious RBG: A Study in Values"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rabbi Jacob Weinstein once said, \u201cYou can\u2019t tell the size of an evergreen until it is cut down.\u201d\u00a0 With the recent death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, American jurisprudence just lost \u2014 following the Rabbi Weinstein metaphor \u2014 a sequoia.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Ginsburg, agree with her politics or not, was a game changer.\u00a0 Her positions, particularly on gender equality, are now baked into the national experience.<\/p>\n<p>She became a liberal icon, the Notorious RBG, because of the barriers she overcame and opportunities she created for women \u2014 but her values cut across political and gender lines.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Ginsburg\u2019s most famous cases involved wronged men.\u00a0 As an ACLU attorney, she successfully argued that widower Stephen Wiesenfeld should receive his deceased wife\u2019s social security benefits: those benefits previously were only applied to widows.\u00a0 \u201cGender-based discrimination hurts everyone,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Ginsburg described her judicial philosophy during her Supreme Court confirmation hearings in 1993 when she quoted Jurist Learned Hand: \u201cThe spirit of liberty that imbues our constitution must reside first and foremost in the hearts of the men and women who compose this great nation, a community where the least shall be heard and considered side-by-side with the greatest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To this, Ginsburg added, \u201cI will keep that wisdom in front of my mind as long as I am capable of judicial service.\u201d\u00a0 Who, on any side of the political equation, could disagree with this credo?<\/p>\n<p>Her specific stances on issues such as abortion provoked heated argument \u2014 but her commitment to spirited debate and respect for the Supreme Court were unimpeachable.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Ginsburg was distinguished off the bench as well: she modeled how to deal with those on the other side of the ideological fence.\u00a0 Her \u201cbest buddy\u201d on the Court was Justice Antonin Scalia, the conservative scholar whose legal philosophy was the polar opposite of Ginsburg\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The two attended operas together, they shared family trips, gathered annually for New Year\u2019s Eve dinners, and were soulmate\/confidantes.<\/p>\n<p>Ginsburg quoted from the comic opera, <em>Scalia-Ginsburg<\/em>, to characterize their relationship: \u201cHe\u2019s not my enemy, he\u2019s my dear friend.\u00a0 Yes, we are different, but we are one.\u00a0 Different in the way we approach interpretation of legal texts, but one in our reverence for the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Scalia was equally effusive in his praise for Ginsburg, saying that he attacked \u201cideas, not people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her comprehensive biographer, Jane Sherron De Hart, theorized that three factors played major roles in Ginsburg\u2019s accomplishments: the formative years with her mother, Celia Bader; her Jewish identity; and the support of her husband, Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Ginsburg, born March 15, 1933, told <em>The<\/em> <em>Forward<\/em> she \u201cgrew up in the shadow of World War II.\u00a0 And we came to know more and more what was happening to the Jews in Europe.\u00a0 The sense of being an outsider \u2014 of being one of the people who had suffered oppression for \u2026no sensible reason\u2026it makes you more empathetic to other people who are not insiders, who are outsiders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celia Bader, who died from cervical cancer two days before Ruth\u2019s high school graduation, was hugely impactful.\u00a0 \u201cMy mother told me to be a lady,\u201d Ginsburg recalled.\u00a0 \u201cAnd for her that meant to be your own person, fend for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Education and reading were central to Celia\u2019s influence.\u00a0 Fridays often meant an \u201cafternoon adventure,\u201d a visit to the local library.\u00a0 According to De Hart, Ginsburg progressed from Nancy Drew to the study of Greek deities \u2014 and the reflections of Anne Frank.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most salient lessons Celia taught her daughter was the uselessness of anger and resentment \u2014 these emotions waste time and achieve nothing.\u00a0 The future star litigator learned that unkind words impeded her power of persuasion.<\/p>\n<p>Celia\u2019s final guidance came with the behavior she exhibited in the face of devastating illness:\u00a0 determination, bravery and stoicism.\u00a0 Ginsburg later embodied these traits in her own epic health struggles.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Ginsburg, who Ruth married when they were both undergraduates at Cornell, became one of the most notable tax lawyers of his generation:\u00a0 his high profile clients included luminaries such as Ross Perot.\u00a0 Martin put his practice on the backburner once Ruth\u2019s ascendancy began. \u201cI have been supportive of my wife since the beginning,\u201d Martin asserted.\u00a0 \u201cAnd she has been supportive of me.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a sacrifice, it\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chief Justice John Roberts said in his moving eulogy that Ruth Bader Ginsburg was \u201cone of the many versions of the American dream.\u201d\u00a0 Her legacy is that she opened legal doors which will allow millions of others to achieve their dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Bader Ginsburg, RIP<\/p>\n<p>ARTICLE SOURCE:<br \/>\nOriginally written by <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.martinoakscemeteryandcrematory.com\/\">https:\/\/blog.martinoakscemeteryandcrematory.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Call Majestic Funeral Services for an immediate response (718)-521-0095, OPEN 24\/7.
